Into the Anti-Atlas

Tafraoute is a small mountain town about 107 km east of Tiznit, set in a valley of rose-coloured granite boulders, almond groves and palm oases. The drive there climbs over the Anti-Atlas by the Kerdous pass and is one of the most scenic roads in southern Morocco.

Allow 2 to 2.5 hours each way. It can be done as a long day trip from Tiznit, but staying a night lets you see the rocks at sunset and sunrise and explore the Ammeln Valley at an easy pace.

Tafraoute sits at roughly 1,000 metres, so it's cooler than the coast in winter evenings — and lovely in late January and February when the almond trees flower.

The Drive

The road from Tiznit to Tafraoute

What to expect

From Tiznit the road heads east across the plain and then winds up into the Anti-Atlas. It is paved but narrow in places, with many bends, steep drops and few barriers. The climb to the Kerdous pass gives wide views back over the plains, and beyond it the road passes stone villages and terraced fields.

Driving tips

  • Drive in daylight and allow extra time — this is not a road to rush
  • Use a lower gear on long descents
  • Watch for goats, cyclists and oncoming trucks on blind bends
  • Fill up with fuel in Tiznit
  • If you suffer from motion sickness, take precautions

Without a car

Grand taxis and local buses link Tiznit and Tafraoute, but departures are less frequent than on the coast and you'll need transport to reach sights around Tafraoute. Many visitors hire a grand taxi or driver for the day through their accommodation.

What to see around Tafraoute

The Painted Rocks

Near the village of Aguerd Oudad, Belgian artist Jean Vérame painted a group of granite boulders in blues, pinks and other colours in 1984. They have been repainted since, and the contrast with the surrounding landscape is striking, especially in late afternoon light.

Napoleon's Hat and other rock formations

Tafraoute is ringed by sculpted granite outcrops. The best known is Le Chapeau de Napoléon above Aguerd Oudad; locals will also point out the "Lion's Head" rock face above the valley.

The Ammeln Valley

North of town, villages of stone and pink-washed houses climb the slopes of the Jebel Lekst beneath the cliffs. Walk between villages on the old paths, and look out for small house museums and argan and almond terraces.

Aït Mansour gorge

A drive south leads to a narrow gorge filled with palms — a green surprise in a dry landscape and a beautiful drive in its own right (check road conditions after rain).

Tafraoute town

A relaxed market town with cafés, simple hotels and shops selling leather babouches (slippers), for which the area is well known.
Planning

Planning your trip

Day trip or overnight?

As a day trip, leave Tiznit early, visit the Painted Rocks and Napoleon's Hat, have lunch in Tafraoute and return before dark. Staying one night lets you add the Ammeln Valley and catch the evening light on the granite.

Make it a loop

With a car, you can return to the coast via Aït Baha and reach Agadir instead of Tiznit — a good option if you are heading north next.

When to go

October to May is ideal. Summer days are hot and dry; winter nights can be close to freezing. Almond blossom usually peaks between late January and February.

Where to stay

Tafraoute has small hotels, guesthouses and campsites; book ahead for almond-blossom weekends and holidays. In Tiznit itself, see where to stay.
