Tiznit as a base

Tiznit sits at a crossroads: the Atlantic coast is 20 minutes away, the Anti-Atlas mountains rise to the east, and the road to the Sahara begins just to the south. That makes it an excellent, affordable base for day trips — with a quieter, more authentic feel than staying in Agadir.

Below are the best day trips from Tiznit, with distances, travel times and how to get there. Most are possible by grand taxi; a car (or a taxi hired for the day) gives you more freedom.

Tip: start early. Grand taxis fill fastest in the morning, the light is better, and you'll be back before dark on mountain or coastal roads.

The Coast

Beaches and coastal towns

Aglou beach

The nearest beach: a long Atlantic strand with red cliffs and, at the northern end near Sidi Moussa d'Aglou, fishermen's dwellings carved into the cliffs. Easy half-day trip by grand taxi. Full guide: Aglou & Beyond.

Mirleft

A relaxed little town above a string of coves — Imin Turga, Aftas, Plage du Marabout, Plage Sauvage — popular with surfers and paragliders. See our Mirleft & Sidi Ifni guide.

Legzira and Sidi Ifni

Combine the red sandstone arch of Legzira (best at low tide) with the white-and-blue Spanish-era streets of Sidi Ifni, returned to Morocco in 1969.

Massa and the Souss-Massa National Park

North of Tiznit, the Massa river estuary is part of Souss-Massa National Park, known for birdlife and as a stronghold of the rare northern bald ibis. Go with binoculars, keep to paths and respect protected areas; a local guide improves your chances of sightings.
Mountains & Desert Edge

Inland trips

Tafraoute and the Ammeln Valley

A spectacular drive over the Anti-Atlas via the Kerdous pass to a valley of pink granite boulders, almond groves and stone villages. Allow a full day or stay overnight. Full guide: Tiznit to Tafraoute.

Anti-Atlas villages

Smaller roads east of Tiznit lead to hill villages, argan terraces and old collective granaries. Ask your accommodation about a local driver or guide who knows the area.

Guelmim

About 120 km south, Guelmim is the traditional gateway to the Sahara provinces, historically known for its camel market. Palm oases such as Tighmert lie nearby. Further west, the vast, remote Plage Blanche needs a 4x4 and an experienced local guide.

Agadir

If you need a city fix — the long beach, the promenade, the big Souk El Had market and the Kasbah viewpoint above the port — Agadir is about 1h 15 away. See Agadir to Tiznit.
Logistics

How to do day trips from Tiznit

Grand taxis

Shared grand taxis leave Tiznit's grand-taxi station for Aglou, Mirleft, Sidi Ifni, Inezgane/Agadir, Guelmim and Tafraoute when full. They are cheap and frequent on busy routes, less so to the mountains. You can also hire a whole taxi for the day — agree the route, stops, waiting time and price beforehand.

Hire car

Ideal for Tafraoute, Massa and the coast. Collect a car at Agadir airport or ask about local agencies in Tiznit. Drive in daylight and expect trucks, animals and speed checks.

Organised trips

Some guesthouses arrange drivers and guided outings — useful for the national park, Plage Blanche or Anti-Atlas villages.

Seasons

Coast trips are good all year; mountain trips are best from October to May. See best time to visit.
